Unions claim that General Motors Co. plans to cut 2,000 additional jobs at its Opel/Vauxhall unit; however, Opel CEO Nick Reilly has come out and has denied this report. Reuters had based its report on documents from GM’s Viability Plan VI, saying that Opel staff will be cut by about 9,960 to a total of 37,700.

Germany will be affected the most, with 5,660 jobs to go. Last Monday, Reilly had a meeting with Opel’s European works council, after which, they issued a statement that said: “According to the plans, headcount will be cut by 2,000 additional persons in comparison to management statements in public.” Reilly emphasized that they don’t plan to go beyond the 8,300 job reductions communicated earlier in conjunction with the restructuring. Reportedly, the additional 2,000 jobs refer to employees who had already signed up to a pre-retirement part-time program in 2006 in Germany. Opel has said it needs to cut jobs as part of its plan to reduce capacity by a fifth to counter slow demand for new cars that could stay weak for years.

In a four-part, 10,000 word, special investigative series, Edwin Black chronicles General Motors extensive relationship with Nazi Germany. GM’s Opel was the largest car and truck maker in the Third Reich. When Hitler came to power, his nation was still primarily a horse-drawn country. From the outset, GM consciously mass produced cars and truck for the German military, becoming a major and indispensable spear of Nazi rearmament. This included the Blitz truck which became the mainstay of the Blitzkrieg that conquered Europe. GM concealed its American control of Opel through special executives committees and board directorates. After the War, GM took all the profit, including that gained from slave labor. After a Congressional investigation, GM tried to obscure the facts and pressured Washington about a special report on the company’s activities. To this day, the company frustrates research efforts into its protracted and profitable involvement in Nazi genocide. The series, published in various sizes and edited formats, was based on Chapter 10 of Internal Combustion and additional new research.

Exactly, imagine if we would hear first about Core i7 from ABC instead of Engadget. The point of a blog is that you provide cutting edge news ASAP, way ahead of mainstream media. To be fair Autoblog does do a pretty good job but there’s room for improvement. Many is a time i see a story here that was published days ago.

I believe head of the union called it a “declaration of war”.I have to say that the only thing that can save GM in Europe the same thing that saves in here so far, good product. Camaro, Terrain, and Giant SUVs are selling pretty well now. Maybe GM has a hot product that will go on sale soon.

The only thing that can save GM is good product? I do not disagree that GM needs to offer great products at competitive prices – but that is just part of what it necessary. If part, if not all of the profit of a vehicle’s sale goes to pay new cars sitting in storage, idling plants and generally keeping what is not needed on life support – you’re still going to be a long way from recovery.Without the drastic cut in the U.S. (and now abroad), the profit can go toward adding to the black, instead of trying to manage the red. (well, after GM pays back the government loans)

I doubt the Belgians are cheaper than the Germans, do you have any basis for saying that? They’re on similar levels in terms of quality of life, are prices any different in the two countries? There is no currency advantage that’s for sure, since both use the Euro.I’m European and I’ve been to both Belgium (Brussel) and Germany, don’t remember it being that different in terms of prices.

I read in the Sunday Times today that probably the only car factory in Europe running at full capacity is the Fiat operation at Tychy in Poland. There has been over capacity for a long time and more European factories will close before the industry re-adjustment is complete. Fiat is closing its facility in Sicily, and the unions are angry about that too. These won’t be the only ones to go.
